Skill of Reading

Key words; identification of letters, The aim of reading, Importance of reading, Importance of silent and loud reading, When teaching letter reading, Choral reading by students, Skill of Reading

Skill of Reading
The identification of letters, words and sentences through visual perception;
We read what is on the page. Two readers are reading the same material and they get two different meanings. Reading is not limited to visual perception. It means getting the message from a printed material.
Reading

When people look at a text and assign meaning to the written symbols, it is interaction between text and the reader.
The aim of reading
To read English with accurate pronunciation
      To speak English with fluency
      To read English with understanding
Importance of reading
  1. Reading help in gaining new knowledge
  2. Help in self-education process
  3. Broaden the thinking
Importance of silent and loud reading
Kemmel & Segal (1988), stated that reading aloud to children builds the desire to read.  They stated, "Reading is one of the most basic educational practices.
It is through reading aloud that children learn that reading for pleasure is worthwhile."
G.L. Macroll (1989) in his research found support for the following statements about reading aloud to students and how it benefits the total reading program:

1.  Helps them get off to a better start in reading.
2.  Improves their listening skills.
3.  Increases their abilities to read independently.
4.  Expands their vocabularies.
5.  Helps them become better speakers.
6.  Improves their abilities as writers.
7.  Improves reading comprehension.
8.  Improves quantity and quality of independent reading.
To help you ignore words you don't need - When you are reading out loud you have to think about and pronounce every word in the text
When you are reading out loud it is normal to read each word from the first letter to the last in the way it is pronounced
Loud reading by students
Each student reads two or three sentences or a paragraph. Teacher corrects students’ errors.
When you are reading silently, you can just skip past anything that you think is too difficult or not important
To make you read faster
Reading out loud slows down your reading speed. Silent reading makes your reading faster
      To improve understanding
to read faster by looking at a whole word or even groups of words at the same time and then moving onto the next section.
Teaching reading is treated on three levels.
      Letter reading
      Word reading
      Text reading
When teaching letter reading.
The teacher deals with three things:
The shape of the letter
 The name of the letter
 The sound of the letter
Teaching text reading
Four techniques and each technique have its own advantages and disadvantages.
* Use all techniques / Methods
Teacher reads the text aloud with accurate pronunciation. Students follow in their books. Teacher can also use a tape produced by a native speaker.
2- Silent reading by students
Students read silently and answer some pre-reading questions. They are asked to read again to answer some post-reading questions
3- Loud reading by students
Each student reads two or three sentences or a paragraph.
4- Choral reading by students
Teacher reads the text aloud sentence by sentence while students read after teacher in chorus.
Teacher sustains the rhythm and the speed by giving starting and finishing signals
- This technique helps shy students to participate in reading
Advantages
-          It gives practice in pronunciation
-          It gives students the opportunity to train their organs of speech to produce the foreign language.
-          It saves a lot of class time that is spent in loud reading by individual students.
What is reading?
-          This technique gives beginners readers self- confidence.

The general purpose of speaking
Introduction
Why teaching speaking is so difficult? What are the ways to improve spoken language skills in schools, what are the vital parts of communicative competence? Compared to teaching listening skills, different techniques have been developed for the improvement of oral communication. In this digital age with the help of new AV aids devices such as computer systems, multimedia, virtual computer software speaking programs and voice chat rooms; where people try to improve their language skills across the world.

One approach of teaching speaking English is, that the learner can understand no matter how incorrect his language, while the other view insists on correctness of language ranging from grammar to pronunciation. This view is known as the fluency-oriented approach. The fluency-oriented approach believes that spoken skills are developed through meaningful communication.
What is the purpose of language?
·         The primary purpose of language is to communicate
·         To express desires and needs
·         Show personality by speaking (analyze the personality by speech)
·         Speech enable a person to move in society
Characteristics of better speaking
·         Fluency
·         Accuracy
·         proper stress on words

·         word order
·         correct grammar
How to improve speaking in class room
Guessing Activities
Mime (mimic): The teacher calls a student to the front and gives him a sentence, written on a piece of paper, that describes an activity.
The student mime (mimic) the activity, e.g., climbing a ladder. The other students try to guess the situation by asking questions
Information gap activities encourage learners to share information. In such
activities, one student can ask questions, the other student answers the questions

Language Ladders
Language Ladders
grouped around a central concept
“Good-by” --- See you later ---Have a good day ---So long
Discussions
Select a topic that students like, one student talk at a time then other can add. Make sure everybody participate
Songs or poems
Reading of poems in class, they hold strong appeal for children and are often memorized.
Storytelling
Storytelling involves the whole class in speaking activities.
The teacher directs the activity by asking questions like
The city of story
Who will be in the story?
What is the main theme of the story?
Teaching Pronunciation
Include pronunciation as an integral part of teaching English from the beginning
-What words and sentence need stressed in the language
Pronounce the ending of each word.
Pay special attention to 'S' & 'ED' endings.
Loud reading in class by students
Fluency & accuracy oriented approach
One view is that the speech is successful if the learner can communicate his thoughts to others; no matter how incorrect the language is, while another view insists on correctness of language, from grammar to pronunciation.
fluency-oriented approach
From this viewpoint, small grammatical or pronunciation errors are insignificant, especially in the early learning stages.
As a matter of fact it could be harmful rather than useful. hindering the natural acquisition of spoken skills
The fluency-oriented approach believes that spoken skills are developed with meaningful communication Naturally. many EFL teachers support it.
The other is that the least amount of correction should be given, otherwise communication itself is hampered.
Errors are regarded as expected by-products observed in the natural process of development
The fluency-oriented approach, however, is not free of weaknesses. the most crucial is fossilization, errors that have become a permanent part in the way a learner speaks (Nation 1989)
Fossilized errors prevent the learner from bettering fluency, as higher accuracy is required for improving fluency in each level
accuracy-oriented approach
Stress on accuracy by pursuing mainly grammatical correctness.
focus on repetition of newly introduced forms or grammatical structures
Learners are provided an opportunity to correct errors
It is true that correction of errors that are provided unintentionally May discourage learners from speaking (fear of error)
But it enables learners to make sure where exactly the problem lies in their speech

  Introduction
Writing is a very productive skill for mankind, with the help of writing we preserve the knowledge for next generation and this is why students have to actively produce language in order to write.
Writing involves different difficult skills of language: vocabulary, spelling, grammar, word order, and logical arrangement of ideas. In the process students often make mistakes when they start to writing. These lead teachers to have a lot of marking and corrections to help the students.
Writing
Writing is a mean of preserving the knowledge people have gained through time, and to transfer it to their children.
Writing involves grammar, vocabulary, word order, spelling and logical arrangement of ideas
A step by step approach to teaching writing is to build the confidence of students.
Activities must be started with teacher-controlled, and move to lesser teacher-controlled activities; to Guided activities

 Controlled, guided and free writing
Controlled Writing Activities
Give controlled exercises to students, so that students do not make too many mistakes. Baker (2003),
Copying correct sentences:
Copying sentences help students to practice new language and is also a good way to practice writing skill.

Matching beginning and ending sentences
1. I went to the shop …    a. to ask for a favor
2. I washed my clothes… b. to buy some bread
3. I walked to my friend.. c. to go to the party

Sequencing jumbled words: In this activity, jumbled words means that the correct words are provided, but in the wrong order. put the words in the right order. Example: going-I-for-am-swimming.
The characteristics of controlled writing
  1. Teacher Dominated
  2. Teacher select topic
  3. Teacher decides when to write
  4. Teacher evaluate
5. One topic at time
6. Easy to Conduct
Guided Writing
Gap-fill sentences:
Fill the gap, where students have to think and write the words in sentences themselves.
Example: I ------- two sisters and------ brothers.
Changing sentences:
Change the grammatical structure, or to a different tense.
Example: I like bananas, but I don’t like oranges.
My friend----------- bananas, but she--------- oranges.
Characteristics Guided Writing
  1. Teacher as facilitator
  2. Teacher and student select topic

4. More than one topic
At a time
5. Time saving
Free writing activities
As soon the students mastered the basic skills of sentence writing, they need to progress toward free writing exercises, paragraph and essay writing. Teachers will give instructions how to organize the essays and paragraphs to improve students’ writing.
Cheron Verster (2002) suggests the following guidelines
Explain the overall organization of an essay to students
Explain paragraph organization.
Give outlines of the easy to students
Ask students to use the outline to write their essay.
Free writing
  1. Student dominated
  2. Students decide when to write
  3. Student check and review
  4. Many topics at a time
  5. No time limit
Teach students a model essay step by step. Once they learned it, ask them to write an outline of their essay keeping in view the step of writing essay:

Brainstorming: This is often a group exercise in which all the students in the class are encouraged to participate by sharing thoughts about a subject.
The term was promoted by Alex Osborn in 1953 in his book ”Applied Imagination”
Osborn claimed that brainstorming was more effective than individuals working alone in creating ideas
